Hydrogen + Innovation = Endless Possibilities!

Edmonton Global, in partnership with the Edmonton Region Hydrogen Hub and Excellence in Manufacturing Consortium, hosted the Manufacturing for Hydrogen Symposium on February 5, 2025 to provide manufacturers with insights into hydrogen’s potential to support the clean energy transition and decarbonize operations.

The symposium offered Innova the opportunity to share with attendees more information on Innova's proprietary clean hydrogen and graphite producing technology, and how to integrate it into their operations to reduce carbon footprints, support green manufacturing practices, and position their organization as a leader in the global energy transition.

Chris Bayley from Innova Cleantech joined the panel, "Utilizing Solid Carbon: Innovations in Manufacturing and Supply and Production", moderated by Brent Lakeman, to discuss how synthetic graphite from Innova's novel methane pyrolysis process can be used to advance local manufacturing opportunities.

Innova's process converts methane to hydrogen, with the carbon transformed to solid carbon in the form of graphite, rather than CO2 emissions. The graphite generated from the process has many existing and potential applications such as soil amendment, battery anodes, construction aggregates, cements, and composites.

An important barrier mentioned on the panel was how methane pyrolysis is often left out of policies, which historically have focused solely on supporting green hydrogen generated through electrolysis and blue hydrogen generated through steam methane reforming. Only recently has methane pyrolysis been recognized in the Federal Clean Economy Investment Tax Credit (ITC). Chris Bayley stressed that policy should be technology agnostic.

Innova's technology addresses multiple thematic waves including decarbonization, carbon capture, clean fuels, clean electricity, critical minerals onshoring, national security, advanced manufacturing, energy storage, and more.
