Matt Desroches & Kamelia (Kami) Giles

Matt Desroches, PEng  |  Kamelia (Kami) Giles, MBA

Matt and Kami met through a mutual business associate. Matt was working as VP, Engineering at a junior energy company, where he learned that the company was selling its natural gas to an integrated energy multinational at a loss due to high transportation costs. He discovered that the gas was being used to produce hydrogen for hydrocarbon upgrading and refining, and that the multinational had plans to scale its hydrogen facilities to produce hundreds of thousands of tonnes per year with associated carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology in an attempt to capture up to 90% of the facility's CO2 emissions. Matt started investigating producing hydrogen in-house, but quickly realized that it wasn't economic at price parity utilizing incumbent methods, let alone with the added cost of CCS.

During that same period, Kami had been taking time off to raise her new daughter, after having transitioned out of her last venture. After decades in traditional energy, she had been researching clean energy alternatives that could be applied to the oil and gas sector. She learned of Canada's Hydrogen Strategy, published in December 2020, to position Canada as a global leader in low-carbon hydrogen production, use, and export, and contribute to the country's 2050 net-zero goals. The publication focused on leveraging Canada's existing energy resources and infrastructure to create a thriving hydrogen economy. Further research revealed that similar hydrogen policy was being implemented in other countries around the globe...
